In early December, Pantone revealed its selection for the 2023 Color of the Year, and Viva Magenta is it!
Welcome, Viva Magenta!
The color is a vivid and deep shade of red. It is bold and dynamic and screams vibrancy and life. Viva Magenta is dramatic.
Pantone describes it this way,
“Viva Magenta vibrates with vim and vigor. It is a shade rooted in nature descending from the red family and expressive of a new signal of strength. Viva Magenta is brave and fearless, a pulsating color whose exuberance promotes a joyous and optimistic celebration, writing a new narrative.”
This new narrative is about bringing our authentic selves, vulnerability, and bravery to relationships. Color has the power to bridge a gap, communicate, empower, make an impact and help us express ourselves.
I’ve seen the power of color in each brand design I’ve created.
Color is Symbolic
Color is symbolic of our times; we can see this with every color of the year selection by Pantone. As Elley Cheng, Vice President & General Manager of Pantone, says, “The color selection represents the attitude, lifestyle, and dreams present across the world at a given moment in time.”
Viva Magenta is a call to courage, to experiment, and share.
The Color Selection
Pantone explains the selection this way, “This year’s Color of the Year is powerful and empowering. It is a new animated red that revels in pure joy, encouraging experimentation and self-expression without restraint, an electrifying and boundary-less shade that manifests as a stand-out statement. Viva Magenta welcomes anyone and everyone with the same verve for life and rebellious spirit. It is a color that is audacious, full of wit, and inclusive of all.”
Pantone’s message with this color selection is to stay open, connect with each other, and bring our true selves to the table with vulnerability and bravery.
We are living in a very unconventional time. The last several years have required that we embrace change, write a new narrative for ourselves, establish a new vision, and stay connected in any way we can.
